On Saturday I ran a 10K through VW Credit called Run for a Reason. It was a 5K walk and 10K run at Independence Grove in Libertyville, IL. It was a great run and nice to run with my training partner, Denise! The race itself was alright. It was 90 degrees and sunny so our priority was mainly hydration and less about speed. After the first 3 miles, we did a combination of walking and running. We finished in 1:24:22 with an average pace of 13:39. Not our best, but we reached our goal of getting back out there and kicking off our training together.
The most important theme of the race was us staying positive. Denise and I have been friends for over seven years now, since our Freshman year in college. We had some great times in college, but Denise and I have really grown close since we graduated.
Over these past three years, we have tried our best to keep each other positive. And when that didn’t work, we were there to commiserate with each other about the trials of “adulthood,” bottle of champagne by our sides at noon. (disclaimer: we were both unemployed at the time) In college, during our senior year we started a blog called “Dietz Hilton” that would later inspire the man himself, Perez Hilton, to finally hit his goal weight. (a girl can dream) Dietz was the beginning of our journey towards who we would want to become. Over the years, it has evolved into much more than just dieting and has inspired us to live an overall healthy lifestyle.
During our race, we both realized that “college Katie and Denise” would be pretty impressed with the women we have become. Three years ago we could barely sprint a block to catch a train (really, we missed it and consoled ourselves with Cinnabon), now we are in running shape and are going to kick this marathon’s butt! I have no doubt with Denise by my side we will finish our marathon. I could not ask for a better friend to do this with!
